"The last of the decent Sony pure analog camcorders" 2002-04-11
By Michael B. Marshall
This camcorder was introduced in 1999, which was in essence the "high water" mark year of the Sony analog camcorder line. Digital -- which had been introduced by Sony years earlier -- took over the "top of the line" position the following year, which led Sony to simultaneously begin "cheapening" the Hi8 analog machines (in an attempt to drive the "bells and whistles crowd" to the more profitable digital camcorders). This meant stereo sound disappeared from the Hi8s in 2000, as did flying erase heads, digital special effects and photo mode.

Being the Hi8 line leader the previous year -- before that cheapening began -- the TRV87 is therefore Sony consumer analog video at its best, crammed with every feature Sony ever put into that format. It's all here -- the Hi8XR format (440 lines of vertical resolution, which in side to side comparison with DV's 500 lines is almost impossible to differentiate), LCD viewing, digital special effects, on-board lighting, Super Nightshot, photo mode, full titling, a wide range of pre-programmed exposure modes, Laserlink...it goes on and on. Yes, granted, the chassis is that classic "handful" TRV size, so this Sony isn't quite as cute and sexy as those teeny current DV palmcorders - but it provides video that is just as good, and costs a lot, lot less. This machine is destined to be a classic, in the same category as the infamous Sony TR101 (their first serious Hi8 machine from almost a decade earlier).

 "Sony CCD-TRV87 Hi8 Camcorder Review" 2001-02-17
By Mark Prijic (Weyauwega, WI United States)
I have used this camera for about 100 hours now. I have used and figured out 99% of the special features.

Pros: Many special effects such as: infrared, black and white, cartoon like effect, and a couple others. It also has 16:9 recording but distorts the picture when recording. It has an excellent playback speaker when watching videos you have already taken on the 2.5 " LCD screen. It also has about 5 digital effects such as slow shutter or flashing pictures. The photo option lets you create a slide show easily and allows you to use the fade features such as overlap really easily. The battery that came with the camera lasts me about 1.8 hours using the LCD screen and about 2 hours using the black and white viewfinder. This is a surprise, because I thought it would only last an hour with the LCD screen. This camera also lets you record TV just like a VCR which is a nice feature if you like to edit videos. I also like the feature that lets you put words on the screen as you record. The stereo sound recording on this camera is great. The LCD screen is also crystal clear and is easily big enough to see what your recording.

Cons: Grainy picture in low light condition. However, if you use the light on the camera, it drastically improves the grainy picture. The zoom gets really pixely at anything zoomed in more than about 180 times. The camera is larger and heavier than the new digital ones. The manual focus can also be tough to work but it isn't too bad.

This is an excellent camera. I would recommend it over the digital ones just because you get a lot more features for your money and the quality of the picture isn't all that different.

 "What fun!" 2000-12-20
By CriticalThinker (TX USA)
I just got this camera in time for the holidays. It is so much fun. The "photo" feature is great. You can create a slide show on tape! The night vision is amazing. The infrared lighting lets you see anything in the dark. It has many special effects you can use to spice up the home movies. The standard battery charges quickly and lasts for about an hour, depending on use of the lcd viewer and light. The picture and sound quality are excellent. Overall, this video camera is an excellent value.

"Great little camera for the money" 2003-01-01
By Barbsjemms (The Desert)
I've been trying to buy a video camera for the past 6 years (ever since my first monster bought in 1990 died). I finally bit the bullet since this camera seemed so reasonable and so highly-rated. I'm happy with every aspect of this camcorder. The bells and whistles are surprisingly complete, and it's so lightweight that I can (and do) spend the entire day with it in my hand.

One caveat...a wide angle lens would be a smart purchase. It's difficult to get far enough away from the action and still hear what is going on.

 "A better camcorder than I thought!" 2002-11-18
By S Downes (Ballston Lake, NY United States)
We purchased this camcorder for the holidays, selecting the CCDTRV308 over the CCDTRV108 due to it's added features such as image stability and auto-light. It arrived within three days - amazing! With my son's birthday coming up at the weekend, and the speedy delivery, it was a real test as to whether I could read the manual and become comfortable in the camcorder's use before the big day. The instructions are clear, concise and easily referenced.

We chose official Sony cassettes for this first run to ensure optimal picture quality and compatibility. Image quality is excellent, but we did notice that it performs better after it has 'warmed up'. This might be due to cassette stability or electronics temperature, but in no way detracts from this product's quality. Fade in/out options are excellent and with the 'cinema' setting gives your production that 'ER' feel.

I suspect that upgrading to a higher capacity battery may be a next step, but it lasted through the kid's party with ease. About 30 minutes of shooting remained, even though we used the LCD the whole time.

Title use is a little confusing, but you do get the option of creating two custom titles in addition to the standard fare.

The tripod was prepared, just in case the weight of the camcorder became tiring, but it was not needed. The lightness of these new camcorders over the ones of yesteryear makes life much easier, and is not burdening.

We researched considerably, before purchasing this product, which is no guarantee of success, but I have no hesitation in recommending it to those considering a Hi-8 camcorder.

 "Simple, but Great Hi8" 2002-07-10
By
If you want nothing more than a really good camcorder to take basic videos, the Sony CCDTRV308 is the way to go.

It's probably the best Sony Hi8 camcamcorder you'll get without all the bells and whistles that let you download video on to your PC.

It has a few great features like NIGHTSHOT (which allows video in virutal darkness) and STEADYSHOT. Also, the 20X zoom works really well. (Don't be impressd by the 460X digital zoom-- on any camcorder; the image becomes more blurry the closer you zoom in with it.)

You'll probably have to get another battery, as the one the Sony CCDTRV308 comes with will only last for about an hour or so when using all the functions (LCD screen, stop and start REC). I recommend buying the NP-QM71; it lasts between 4 and 6 hours.

BUT (A VERY BIG BUT), If you want to anything more than basic VCR editing, get at least a MiniDV, especially if you're willing to spend between $500 and $1000. I was willing to drop $500 for a MiniDV because I wanted to easily edit my videos, but I wasn't willing to spend another $500 to upgrade my PC to accomodate the large amounts of data.

Otherwise, the Sony CCDTRV308 is a great Hi8 camcorder for basic video recording and little or no editing.

"What more do I need?" 2002-07-09
By Arthur Spooner
Price and function are two of the main reasons I now own this camcorder. I have webtv so I can capture all of the stills I need and do it quite easily and without software and a computer.Keep it simple stan is definitly my mantra and this camcorder helps me do just that. More functions and options would just go to waste and be confusing. It is light and ergonomic and I got a free tripod and camera bag with mine at circuit city. I wouldn't buy electronics on line again (been there done that). A longer battery life would be all I would ask for .

 "Nice Camera" 2004-01-06
By R. Anderson (Petoskey, MI USA)
I've had this camera for almost a year now, and it's the first movie camera of any kind I've ever used. I have a digital still camera (an olympus 2100cz) so I'm not a neophyte.
I'm finding it easy to use. I use to film my wifes speaking engagements. So i've used this camera in a small room with only 5 or 6 people in it, or in very large auditorium with 200 or so people in it. It worked beautifully. The remote helps a lot when using a tripod. It does an especially nice job picking up audio even at distance.
I had to get a special cable to do transfers to my Macintosh, but once on the mac everything gets really easy.
I guess it doesnt have all the bells and whistles of the more expensive cameras, but if you look over the stats in the discription above, you should be able to figure out this one is for you.

By Jason Mackey (Cassville, MO)
This camera was given to me for Christmas a couple of years ago. It has good video quality, and the ability to play back the tape using an S-video jack. The fade options are limited when compared to other Sony products, but for an entry level camera it is a good value. I recommend this camera to anyone who just wants to record special occasions and for playing around. If you are a serious shutterbug, I would recommend something with more bells and whistles.

Overall this camera is a very good quality at a reasonable price.

"New Owner and very pleased !" 2002-01-05
By
I visited several sites, and looked at a lot of product reviews. But after reading some of the reviews here, I decided to take the plunge! I purchased mine for ... less than the stated price here, even though I'm not pleased with the customer service I received from the store I bought it at, I VERY please so far with MY NEW Sony DCR-TRV130! I also brought the infrared unit and can't wait to try it out! I going to get the upgrade for my PC, and I will be set.
OOPs almost forgot, both the DV Camcorder kit, and the ULEAD will require updates you can find on their websites to work with XP and they're signed.

Thanks again to all those who took the time to write a review. You, and Amazon.com were VERY helpful in my deciding to make this purchase.

Ok..upgrades in place, and BOY was it a chore! But I'm STILL VERY PLEASED with this camcorder. I got a 1394 Firewire (Home DV Editing Kit) made by SIIG, Inc., which is supported by XP. and increased memory to 512MB. Why was it a chore? Because I let COMPUSA do the upgrade. I must say they did offer to assist me in getting my camcorder to work with the new upgrades with also included a NVIDA Geofore 2MX 100/200, but BELIEVE me...save yourself the hassle, and do it yourself! In the end I did just that! All I had to do once I got everything set up was make sure my camcorder was turned to VCR BEFORE connecting it to my pc, and before opening any editing programs. I have ULEAD VideoStudio, and MS MovieMaker, and Windows Media Player, all work well together. I was able to make stills, and a CD with ease! This camcorder is GREAT no matter what anyone says! I still give it a four because it was a hassle to get to work with my PC. I almost gave up, but glad I didn't. You will need to get patches for the 1394 kit, and ULEAD from their websites to work with XP. Both are digitally signed. Also don't put an antivius program to the 1394 ports.

I purchased the CCD-TRV68 back in 2001 and have found it to be an EXCELLENT camcorder. I used this camera for shooting videos for broadcasting, interviews, traveling documentary style videos, not to mention family stuff. I have used this poor camera tirelessly over the last 8 years and it has never failed to work properly for me. I would recommend it to anyone. The ONLY downside is there is no option to attach an external microphone cord.

By C. Greaney
We used this camcorder about 3 times before it died. It would no longer record properly. It captured audio but not video (ended up with a blank screen video capture.)

The problem lies with a buggy CCD block assembly. The same problem can be seen with similar Sony camcorder models. These camcorders tend to develop the blank screen issue anywhere from 6 months to 2 years after purchase.

There are reports all over the internet about this problem but Sony denies that it's a manufacturing issue and wanted 200+ to repair. I wouldn't get this camcorder (or any other Sony camcorder) again.

I recieved this camera as a gift and used it 6 times before the amplifier went out, so that when you were watching your videos-you got sound, but no picture. This happened with our first camera, but you could see the video but there was no sound-also the amplifier. Unfortunatly it didn't fall under warranty so we have a broken camera lying around and must buy a new one. I give it three stars because for the time that I was able to use it, it was a great camera. If you do decide to buy this one-maybe think about an extended warranty?

 "GREAT CAMCORDER BAG !" 2008-08-29
By Michael Richards (Hollywood, CA)
Bought this same bag around 3 months ago at WallyWorld for $16.98. I would recommend it without hesitation. I use it to carry Canon DC310 camcorder AND a Kodak Z760 Digital camera. Has ample room for both with the adjustable dividers in main compartment. With all the other pockets & compartments, it also has room for my Memorex travel case that holds 12 mini DVDs, travel chargers & cords for both cameras, extra batteries for both cameras, various ac adapaters & cords, extra memory cards, a Sharpie, cleaning cloths, etc. I had used a smaller Samsonite camera bag for the Kodak for about 3 years before purchasing the camcorder. Loved it, too, so I already had a good feeling about the Samsonite brand. The only complaint I have about this bag is that I cannot figure out a way to get my 66" tripod in there! Seriously, though, I would not not hesitate to buy this or any other Samsonite camera bag in the future. I would check around for a better price, however.
