 "Excellent camcorder great buy" 2001-06-15
By A mother (Urbana, IL USA)
My son just bought this camera a short while ago and he just can't stop admiring it...Neither can his friends. This camcorder comes with plenty of features including steadyshot, 560x digital zoom and 20x optical zoom. Even though the battery it comes with is for two hours only, it suits him just fine. He has taken many shots and loved them all. The effects are neat:sephia, pastel, negative art, black&white, solarize, mosaic, slim, stretch. The sephia is my favorite and reminds me what old movies looked like. There are also many fades to choose from. Sony really has put a lot of work into this camera. I really suggest you buy it if your looking for a high-quality, moderatly priced camcorder.

 "Great Hi8 Camcorder" 2001-06-06
By E. Moore (United States)
I bought this camcorder to replace a Canon 8mm that was over 8 years old. My Canon camcorder stopped recording sound and finally stopped working. Canon would not repair it because it was an old model. My family has several Sony electronics products and none of them have had any problems. That says enough for me about Sony quality. About the camcorder...I like the video quality produced by the Sony Hi8 TRV98. It is a little better than the standard 8mm picture produced by my old Canon camcorder. I know Hi8 is not as good as the 500+ line resolution of Digital 8. However, the Hi8 400+ line picture quality is great. The pictures are sharp with excellent color. This is a great camera for the price if you do not plan on "going digital" to load videos to your computer. I like the large 3.5 inch LCD screen, Lithium Ion battery and the S-video out. ....

"Great choice for a first time camcorder buyer." 2002-03-08
By David J. Gannon (San Antonio, TX USA)
...The unit is easy to use and the instructions are simply presented and very clear cut. My wife uses it without complaint and is always happy with her results.

On the other hand, the unit does have some nicethough limited-- advanced features such as preset exposures, special effects, and Sony's unique NightShot feature. My daughter especially likes the special effects package. I particularly appreciate the Night Shot feature. I video a lot of youth sporting events that can involve a lot of transitional lighting issues, especially on those evenings around the time change seasons, an this unit handles all those issues very well. It does a commendable job in moonlight as well.

The unit is well designed and rugged. It is not a choice for die-hard vidoephilesthe range of advanced features is too limited, but they should be adequate for normal family outing type use.

Battery life using the LCD is rather short. The viewfinder picture is black & white. Using it rather than the LCD expands battery life significantly but the quality of he picture in the viewfinder is not good.

The audio quality is average. Functionality of interface with other devices (TV, PC, etc.) is good.

On the whole, a great unit to start out with or for more adventurous outings where camera safety might be an issue. (I took this one white water raftingnot my state-of-the-art unit.). It has enough features to give a feel for an advanced unit without overwhelming the user, provides better than average output and cost wise is a relative bargain.

 "great value!" 2000-01-11
By Anthony S. Zorn (San Salvador, El Salvador)
I bought this for christmas and I must say I am quite impressed! light enough for easy handling, good image quality, a lot of features for the low, low price. LCD panel does drain the battery quite quickly but with the eyepiece (black and white...aaarrgghh) you can get almost 8 solid hours of filming in...more than enough...recommended for first or second camcorder owners...

I'm not an ellectronics person and I never used a camcorder before, so when I was given one as a gift from my wife I started to get worrried. But the instructions were easy to follow and the camera works beautifully. I used it all Christmas day and the quality of the pictures are wonderful. I think as a result of having such good fortune with my camcorder, I am looking forward to my next sony purchase

For an avid hunter and outdoorsman, like myself, the Sony "Night Shot" technology cannot be more fun! The liturature I have seen on this camcorder emphasizes the ability to record in total darkness; however, I find the little camcorder's performance in very low light conditions, such as moon light, to be very exciting for animal observation.

"Low resolution and poor quality" 2007-05-04
By B. Zhang
I bought it new in 2002 for $400. The color is pretty good. The resolution is very poor, only close shot get you satified. Other than that you get blur edge and barrel distortion sometimes. I didn't use it a lot for the first 3 years, only the last 2 years I used it regularly to tape my daughter's piano class homework every 2 weeks for 5-8 minutes each time. Recently I have to knock this camera extremly hard several times to make the recording start (It's common issue as the piano teacher told me.). So I have to find a new camcorder now. I don't know what can I do if it refuses to work one day in my daughter's piano class.

"loved it when it worked... get an ext. warranty on this one" 2006-04-02
By mcc2133 (vancouver, wa)
I've had two of these, and both of them lasted about a year? Both of them had the same malfunction- tapes jamming in the camera. I talked to a repair shop & they see this a lot with sonys because of the design. Using purchased movie software we were able to make good movies in our pc & burn to dvd. Using pixela software included we could capture still shots (good enough for listing things on ebay, etc.) which was a novelty then!

 "Poor support" 2004-08-28
By C. J. Healey (Johnson City, TN, USA)
I've had the camcorder for a while now, and was hoping to be able to use the USB streaming feature to make small computer movies and send them to my friends and family overseas. Although the camcorder is good the included software is weak and the USB streaming makes a very choppy poor quality AVI file. I recently got a new computer and could not find the device driver disk that came with the camcorder. Sony technical support was a joke and they ended up trying to sell me a driver for my camcorder. So now I have a camcorder that I can plug into my TV or record onto a VHS (Do people still use VHS?) but any dreams I have of putting something on my computer are fading fast. I'm going to have to find a new way to send my parents the video I took of my new house.

Frankly in this day and age an analogue camcorder is a waste of money.

 "Ignore the USB Streaming" 2004-04-08
By M Windmill (Boston, MA)
While this is a decent Analog camcorder, don't expect much from the USB streaming feature. The maximum frame size over USB is 320x240, which is half the minimum recommended for creating a DVD out of a home movie. If you want to get the video from your tapes onto a computer or DVD, expect to purchase a separate video capture device or card.

To make matters worse, the bundled software doesn't let you capture more than thirteen minutes of video at a time before it crashes and claims the drive is out of disk space, regardless of how much disk space you really have avaliable. This happens even when recording to NTFS volumes, which do not have the 4 gig file size limit of Fat32.

Most third party programs will also have issues using the camcorder's USB streaming features. The drivers create an eclectic audio device that many video capture programs can't see, so you'll have to use a separate audio cable unless you like the idea of not having any sound. Roxio's products are among the many that can't use the audio driver.

In short, it's a decent camcorder, assuming you compare it to other devices as though the USB streaming feature didn't exist, because for all practical purposes, it doesn't.

"Great camera, but missing important feature" 2004-01-09
By Jonathan Ludwig (Utah)
This is a great camera. We use it a lot. I love the night shot, the steady shot works great and it has a lot of other nice features. Everything on it works great all the time. The light metering and auto focus work very well too.

There is only one problem that really frustrates me. It has a right and a left microphone and records in stereo, but there is no way to get stereo playback through the analog A/V output. That's certainly one of the cheapest things I've seen in products that I've bought. It's very disapointing from a name like Sony.

 "You can do better" 2005-06-16
By Axis (Tampa, FL USA)
There are plenty of decent, basic Hi-8 cameras out there with nightshot and flipout LCD viewfinders. My advice? Get one of those.

My company uses the TRV118 to rent to customers because it's supposed to be easy to operate and pretty much dummy proof, but customers complain if they have to change a tape, and I don't blame them. I don't know who had the bright idea to put the tape door on the bottom of the camera, but I sure hope they're not working for Sony any more!

In order to change tapes (god forbid your daughter's dance recital is a minute longer than the standard 60 minutes) you have to remove the camera from the tripod, unscrew the base plate, pop the tapes and screw everything back together. And just that quick, you missed the debut performance of your own future Broadway star!

There's nothing Sony can do to make up for the frustration and lost moments used up changing tapes, except perhaps take it back and give you a coupon for a Canon ZR70MC MiniDV!

 "Decent camcorder" 2004-04-13
By (WEST LAFAYETTE, IN USA)
Being the first camcorder that I have, I can't really compare this with others. However, this camcorder is pretty decent. It's small and lightweight thus great for travel companion. The playback quality is pretty good. It may look blurry if you watch it on the LCD, but looks much better when you plug it to your TV. It uses Hi-8 tape, which is more expensive compare to 8mm. The nightshot feature is not that great, it's blurry (black and white of course). So if you are buying this camcorder for its nightshot capability, I'd suggest browsing for a different one. The battery only lasts about 80-90 minutes (with LCD screen and non-continuous recording), and it takes about 2.5 hours to fully charge it.
Overall, it is still a good camcorder, especially for beginners and for daily use.

I previously had a Sharp viewcam, but, after 4 years it went dead. I decided to stay with the Hi-8 because my old tapes were in Hi-8, and didn't want the extra expense of going digital. I am very happy with this camera. The night-shot is a great feature - it's really amazing, you can tape your baby sleeping in a pitch black room if you want. If you're looking for a Hi-8 camera, this is an excellent choice.

It is a very good product for the price that we pay for it. All the advertised Specs works and Much better than any other camcorder in it's class. I Found that this Camcorder has S-Video out too! which is very cool, It can be used to Capture Video using a MPEG Capture card and make VideoCDs!. It has LP mode and with Proper Tapes you can get about 8hrs of recording time. The supplied Battery lasts for about 160mins. Again it is a very cool product 5 Stars for it!, Buy it if you still can find it, It is hard to find this product in stores and ONLINE.

"Lightweight & easy to use" 2002-01-19
By handy (Pacific Grove, CA USA)
It's lightweight & easy to use. It has the Sony Nigthshot feature for 0 Lux recording. The battery that came with it gave me 190 minutes from the battery display (850amphrs). I left it recordng & it went for 2 hours & then some as I didn't get to see how long it would record but at least that long. I found it easy to hold & the buttons are pretty comfortable. The zoom is an easy slide button on top instead of a rocker switch. The viewfinder was clear & with a nice adjustment so that I could see things sharp. It can even make the text in the viewfinder twice as big. The digital zoom is great but you get fuzzy pictures using it with any camera, but lucky with this camera you can turn it off, or set it to 40x or 200x. The optical zoom of 20x is very nice. Most digital cameras only have 10x zoom. I don't miss the pull out lcd view finder because I don't want strangers looking at it & I don't need a digital camera after all cause I can input the video with the s-video out on this camera into my computers s-video in card & have a digital mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 recording on the HD. Windows ME & Xp come with free video editing software anyway for this & I can out put it to vcd or svcd. Also nifty is a cool option to turn off the record light in front of the camera so people don't know you are recording :-)

 "Very nice starter cam" 2002-01-08
By H. E. Paul (Orem, UT United States)
This is my first camcorder. I was intrigued by the special price run on it. I bought it online on my lunch break and stopped by Circuit City on the way home from work and picked it up.

It is a Hi8/8mm recorder and does not record in stereo, but it is very nice! The battery says it lasts for 2 hours, but I have gotten around 3 on a charge. The camera is very simple to use. I have figured out most of the options just by playing around with it. It shoots in very low light and even has a low light feature which will work in almost darkness. The picture and audio quality are outstanding! It is worth every penny in my opinion. It is a great beginner's unit, but if you want something more high-end then I would look at a digital camera.

There are a lot of options for accessories including a 20-hour battery. The unit is very lightweight and compact, which makes it easy to carry and easy to do precision filming with. I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking to venture into the camcorder market.

"Problem with tape door :( avoid this camcorder" 2004-08-28
By John Anderson (Irvington, New York United States)
Had this camcorder for 2 1/2 years. Used it maybe for about only 20-30 hours worth of tapes.

The features were nice, video was nice, easy to use BUT!!!!

The tape ejection door is right where your hand holds the camera. The door where you insert and remove the tape started opening by itself, for no reason? Then, it would jam and get stuck. Now, I can't get the darn thing opened to remove my latest tape.

seems like other people had the same problem.

I am surprised that they have to make such a fancy mechanical door, just something more to go wrong...... and it did.

$400 +/- down the drain. Thanks for NOTHING Sony!!!!!!!!

What is wrong with the door mechanism??? I have had mine serviced (and payed for labor) TWICE for the same problem. two weeks after th second repair it stopped loading the tape again. Everything else still works, but what good is it to not be able to record or view tapes on it. I stoped throwing money at SONY, for this product. Next one I buy will be a different brand.

By Harold Oliver (Canandaigua, New York USA)
I purchased this camera shortly after it appeared on the market. It has served me very well. It is easy to operate, and stands up well to rough and tumble use. I have used it on ocean beaches[sand], in hot air balloons[sometimes hard landings] in private planes[vibrations],taping summer event[extreme heat] and it works just fine. I have owned Sony products in the past and found them to be a wonderful consumer product.

As a point of reference, I have used apx. 150 full tape in this camcorder with perfect results.

This camcorder is no longer available, but if you can find a good clean used one , I say "go for it'.

This is my FIrst Camcorder and brought it with SONY Brand In MIND.Unfortunately sony could not live up to the expectations in this product. After I purchased it ,i might have used it couple of times and it has problem.I thought that i could get it fixed with sony warranty, but the sony service dealer said that it does not cover the Labour as it is out of 90day period needed for applying the warranty towards the repair.I had to pay the repair cost out of my pocket and got it fixed. Then later after 6 months during a trip to DISNEY i had the same problem and could not use this Camera any more from then.
i never expected that SONY products would be giving such a horrible performance for the value we pay.
BEWARE AND dont go for it .FOr the same price i paid when i purchased ,there are much advanced Camcorders in the market now.
